FAQ

Counselling: Frequently asked questions

A psychiatrist typically has a doctoral degree in psychology and is trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders, conduct research, and provide therapy.  A counselor may, as I do, have a BSc degree in counseling or a related field and typically focuses on providing counselling and support for individuals dealing with personal challenges, but may not be able to diagnose and treat mental health disorders.

In a counseling session, you will typically talk with a mental health professional about your concerns, challenges, and goals. The therapist may provide guidance, support, and feedback, and may suggest coping strategies or other techniques to help you improve your mental health and well-being.

Book an initial assessment and think about these considerations:
  1. Do you feel at ease with the therapist?
  2. Do you think you could build a trusting relationship with them?
  3. Would you feel comfortable telling them about intimate details of your life?
  4. Do you feel safe with them?
  5. Do you like their manner towards you?
  6. Did they listen to you and understand you?

If not try an alternate counsellor, there are many options for online therapists.

If you live outside of Zanzibar, Tanzania and you are happy to have safe online counselling sessions, then by all means contact me and these can be arranged.

If you would prefer to see a counsellor in person then look for one that is based closer to where you live.

If you prefer to use a language other than English such as Swahili, then do search online for a counsellor that can speak your language.

Yes, counselling sessions are typically confidential, meaning that what you discuss with your therapist will not be shared with others without your permission, except in cases where there is a legal or ethical obligation to do so (such as; if the therapist believes that you or someone else is at risk of harm) - and even then this will be discussed with you.  If you have concerns over confidentiality please be assured you can contact me and ask any questions you would like to reassure yourself.

Fees for counselling in Tanzania can vary depending if it is an in-person or online session, if it is couple counselling or if it is work-related.  See the Pricing Plans available here.

Yes, if your medical insurance specifically covers mental health or counselling you can check with Urban Care Clinic at Fumba Town or Jambiani.

The role of a counsellor or therapist is to support you and not to coach or tell you what to do.

A Therapist will seek to help you get better at making your own decisions and finding your own answers. They want to help you gain the confidence and capability to decide for yourself.

This doesn't mean that therapists want you to avoid difficult decisions but they will come alongside you to help you look clearly at the situation whilst recognising your complete right to make those decisions for yourself.
